If <br /> contamination is detected at the limits of the initial <br /> excavation, the backfill material can be re-excavated, if <br /> necessary. If the excavation is significantly deeper than <br /> expected or if the walls are unstable, the pit should be <br /> backfilled regardless of the weather. <br /> Sampling Plan <br /> The base and sides of the excavation will be divided into a grid <br /> based on 10-foot intervals along the length of the pit. At least <br /> one representative soil sample will be collected from each every <br /> 10 'foot segment of the trench. I Individual samples from the base <br /> of the excavation will each be analyzed. Samples will also be <br /> collected at ten foot intervals from the sides of the excavation: <br /> These samples will be combined into at least two composite <br /> Bamples. r <br /> If the contaminated zone is limited to a zone 20 feet by 40 feet, <br /> 4 individual samples and two composite samples (consisting of <br /> approximately 6 individual samples) from the sides of the <br /> excavation will be collected. If the base of the excavation is <br /> significantly wider than 20 feet, additional samples will be <br /> 8 <br />
