22 July 2005
AGE-NC Project No. 05-1282
using a 1.5-inch Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with four 1.125-inch diameter and 6-inch
long brass sleeves to the total depth of each boring. Upon sample retrieval, the ends of the second
sleeve will be covered with Teflon sheets, capped, and sealed with tape. Each sample sleeve will be
labeled with the boring designation, depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Soil samples
encountered in the borings will be visually classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the
Unified Soil Classification System(USCS).Additionally, soilsamples will be field screened for the
presence of volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter(OVM),equipped with photo-
ionization detector(PID).
The soil boring will be advanced to the top of the ground water table, as identified by collection of
a saturated soil sample, to collect grab ground water samples. Once ground water has been
encountered, the samples will be collected using a Geoprobe water sampling assembly with a pre-
cleaned, 1-inch diameter, 0.01-inch slotted polyvinylchloride (PVC) screen. The ground water
samples will be extracted by lowering a Teflon hose-bailer through the hollow center of the push
rods into the screened section. If ground water is slow to charge, AGE may leave the PVC piping
in the boring for a few hours in order to gather a complete ground water sample, but neither the
piping nor the boring will be left in the boring or open overnight.
Ground water samples will be collected into three laboratory-supplied, 40-milliliter (ml) volatile
organic analysis (VOA) vials containing 0.5 ml 18% hydrochloric acid solution as a sample
preservative, and one 1-liter amber bottle without preservative. Following collection, the samples
will be appropriately labeled, placed on ice, and kept in a chilled container until delivered to the
laboratory for analysis. Appropriately sealed and labeled soil and ground water samples will be
placed in a chilled container under ice and transported under chain of custody procedure to a
Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory.
Selected soil and ground water samples will be analyzed by Cal Tech Environmental Laboratories,
a DHS-certified laboratory, for one or more of the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline, diesel, motor oil-and hydraulic oil
(TPH-g, TPH-d, TPH-mo and TPH-ho; aka TPH-all)by EPA Method 8015 Modified;
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes(BTEX),and the fuel additives methyl tertiary-
butyl ether(MTBE),tertiary butanol(TBA),di-isopropyl ether(DIPE),ethyl tert-butyl ether
(ETBE),tert-amyl methyl ether(TAME),ethylene dibromide(EDB)and 1,2-dichloroethane
(1,2-DCA) in accordance with EPA Method 826013; and
• EPA Method 8260B Full Scan to analyze for isopropyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, toluel,
normal-propyl acetate, acetone and blanket wash or waste ink residuals.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
