UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA
LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY
SITE 300, GROUND WATER CLEANUP STATUS -2- 20 December 1989
six months. Therefore, it is unclear if any interim remedial measures will take
place.
2. Environmental Test Area (ETA)
The ETA includes the Building 834 complex, Building 830 area, and Building 833
area. Most of the pollution in the ETA occurs in Building 834 complex where TCE
has polluted a perched aquifer. LLNL has been conducting a pilot study on ground
water treatment technologies for about two years. The effort has been plagued to
some extent by mechanical problems with the treatment technology, including algal
growth in the aeration tank, TCE adsorbiny/absorbing into piastic tank walls, an
oily compound in the extracted ground water that interferes with the airstripping,
and excessive water condensation in the monitoring instrument lines.
In the ERWP, LLNL proposed to submit an RI/FS for the Building 834 complex by 1
January. 1990 and to begin RA by 1 April 1990.
LLNL continues to monitor TCE found near Buildings 830 and 833. At Building 830,
ground water contains low levels of TCE, while at Building 833, TCE has been found
at low levels in the soil vapor.
LLNL proposes to submit the RI/FS for Building 833 by 1 April 1991 and to begin
RA by 1 May 1991. No further reports are proposed for Building 830 at this time.
3. Pit 7 Complex
TCE and tritium escaped from Pits 3 and 5 in the Pit 7 complex which is comprised
of Pits 3, 4, 5, and 7. Pollution is confined to a shallow aquifer atop a ridge.
LLNL submitted the RI%FS on 17 November 1989 and proposes to begin RA on 1 April
1990. LLNL. also proposed to cap Pit 7 and install runoff diversion ditches to
prevent inundation and infiltration of the landfill .
4. Building 850/Fast Firing Area
A second tritium plume emanates from Building 850 (a short distance from Pit 7)
and extends to the East Firing Area. LLNL continues to monitor the pollution via
numerous monitoring wells.
LLNL proposes to submit the RI by 1 May 1990, the FS by I January 1991 , and to
begin RA by 1 April 1991.
5. Pit 6
TCE has leaked into the shallow aquifer, but our evaluation of the Solid Waste
Assessment Test report determined that _ hazardous _materials at hazardous
concentrations had not leaked. The plume has remained almost stationary for
several quarters.
