1 <br /> ' Libbey Owens Ford Co. <br /> Site Investigation <br /> August 23, 1996 <br /> Page-2- <br /> Approximately 15 cubic yards of soil were excavated during the investigation (Figure 3, <br /> ' Appendix A). Condor screened the excavated soil using an organic vapor analyzer-(photo ionization <br /> detector - PID). PID readings ranged from 5 to 80 parts per million (ppm). The soil was jogged <br /> ' according to the Unified Soil Classification System. From the ground surface to a depth of <br /> approximately 8 feet below the ground surface (bgs), the soil type was silty, fine grained sand. From <br /> ' 8 feet bgs to 'approximately 12 feet bgs the soil was well sorted, fine to very fine grained sand. The. <br /> excavation was terminated at 13 feet bgs. .All soil excavated during the fieldwork had a strong diesel <br /> odor. The excavated soil was placed in steel bins lined with plastic sheeting. The excavated soil was <br /> ' subsequently transported to Forward Landfill of Manteca, California, for disposal. <br /> ' 2.2 Sampling <br /> ' Soil samples were collected from the sidewalls of the excavation at 5 feet, 8 feet and 11.5 feet <br /> bgs for chemical analyses. Duplicate samples were collected at 8 feet and 11.5 feet for potential <br /> geotechnical testing. The soil samples were collected using a hand held, rod mounted, soil sampler <br /> fitted with a clean brass liner. Each soil sample was retained, undisturbed, in the brass liners. The <br /> liners were sealed at the ends with Teflon tape, capped, wrapped with duct tape, and labeled. The <br /> ' samples were placed in a cooler chilled with ice and delivered within 24 hours of collection, under <br /> chain-of-custody procedures, to GeoAnalyticai Laboratories in Modesto, California. The duplicate <br /> ' samples collected at 8 feet and 11.5 feet bgs are retained at Condor for geotechnical testing, if needed. <br /> ' Following the soil sampling, diesel product slowly entered the bottom of the excavation at <br /> approximately 12 feet bgs. A bailer sample was collected .for field inspection. At least I foot of <br /> idiesel product (dyed red) was observed at the bottom of the excavation. No groundwater interface was <br /> noted. Upon completion of the soil.removal and sampling, the excavation was left open and <br /> surrounded with barricades and safety tape. <br /> On July 25, 1996, a Condor representative collected a diesel product sample from the <br /> excavation for water content analyses. The product surface was located at a depth of approximately 9 <br /> ' feet bgs. The product thickness could not be determined since no groundwater interface was noted. <br /> Based on the field observations, it appeared that at least 2 feet of diesel product was present at the <br /> ' bottom of the excavation. A clean, disposable, bailer was lowered into the excavation and a product <br /> CONDOR <br />
