1 Libbey Owens Ford Co.-Preliminary Soil and Groundwater Investigation Report
Standby Generator Diesel Supply Line
January 20. 1997
Page-7-
clay, clay, or clayey silt. The borings were either terminated in these finer textured materials or
encountered additional fine grained sand before termination.
OVA-PID measurements of soil samples from GP2, GP3, GP7, GP8, GP9, GP 10, and GPI I
' were at or below the instrument detection limit of 1.0 part per million (ppm). No hydrocarbon odors
were noted in the soil samples from these borings. OVA-PID measurements of soil samples from GPI
' ranged from 6 to 41 ppm, GP4 from less than 1.0 ppm to 68 ppm, GPS from less than .1.0 ppm to 203
ppm, and from GP6 from less than 1.0 ppm to 210 ppm. Hydrocarbon odor was noted in soil samples
' from borings GPI and GP4 through GP6. In these borings, hydrocarbon odor in the vadose zone soil
increased with depth.
No petroleum hydrocarbon odor was noted in groundwater samples collected from borings
' GP2, GP 7, GP8, or GP 11. Slight petroleum hydrocarbon odor was noted in groundwater samples
from borings GP3, GP9, and GP 10. Strong petroleum hydrocarbon odor and undissolved petroleum
1 (free) product were noted in groundwater samples collected from borings GP 1, GP4, GP5, and GP6.
The groundwater sample from GPI was submitted for laboratory analyses even though it contained a
' small amount of free product. The groundwater samples collected from GP4, GP5, and GP6 contained
substantial free product and were not submitted for laboratory analyses. Field observations for each
' boring and the estimated extent of free product on the groundwater table are shown in Figure 4,
Appendix A.
Prior to backfilling with cement/bentonite mix, floating product thickness was measured in
' borings GP5 and GP6. A temporary one-inch diameter piezometer was installed in GP5 and GP6 after
the collection of a groundwater sample. Borings GPI and GP4 experienced caving and therefore,
piezometer installation was not possible. Approximately two (2) inches and approximately seven (7)
inches of floating product were measured in borings GP5 and GP6, respectively, using a transparent
' bailer.
' CONDOR
