UST Removal Report 2
Tho Southland Store#20632,4627 Davina Dr, CA December 11 1998
' 3.2 Soil Sample Collection
On October 22, 1998, Fluor Daniel GTI personnel collected eight soil samples from the side walls of
' the UST excavation One sod sample was collected at a depth of approximately 8 feet BGS at each
end of the three USTs and along the east and west UST pit side walls In addition, on October 28,
1998,six sod samples were collected beneath the fuel dispenser at a depth of approximately 3 5 feet
BGS) On November 13, 1998 two additional sod samples were collected beneath the UST vent Imes
(Figure 2) All sod sampling was conducted at the direction of Mr Michael Kith of the SJCPHS Sod
samples were collected in 2-inch-diameter by 6-inch-long brass tubes directly from a backhoe bucket
Soil beneath the former USTs and dispenser island consisted of a dark gray to brown silty, clay to
approximately 10 feet BGS,followed by a brown clayey, silty sand to approximately to the depth of the
tank pit The sample tubes were sealed with Teflon pads, plastic caps and tape, labeled, placed on ice
in an insulated container, and submitted for analyses under chain-of-custody manifest to either state-
, certified Acculabs Inc , in Davis, California or state-certified Core Laboratories in Anaheim,California
A total of fourteen sod samples, collected from the side walls of the UST excavation and beneath the
dispenser island,were analyzed for benzene,toluene, ethylbenzene,total xylenes(BTEX), methyl-tert-
' butyl-ether(MTBE), and total petroleum hydrocarbons-as-gasoline (TPH-G) by EPA methods
8020/8015 modified, for the oxygenates MTBE,tert butanol (TBA),diisopropyi ether(DIPS), ethyl-tert-
butyl ether(ETBE), and tert amylmethyl ether(TAME) by EPA method 8260,and for total lead using
' EPA method 6010
3.3 Water Sample Collection
MOn October 21, 1998, one water sample was taken from each of the 4,700-gallon baker tanks filled
with groundwater pumped from the UST pit Sampling of the baker tanks was authorized by Mr Harlin
Noll of the SJCPHS On October 22, 1998,one water sample was taken from the UST pit excavation
Sampling was conducted at the direction of Mr Michael Kith of the SJCPHS The water samples were
collected using disposable bailers Groundwater samples from the baker tanks and UST pit excavation
were placed In analysis-specific containers with analysis-specific preservative The samples were then
sealed using Teflon septum caps, labeled with the job Identification number, the sample number, date,
time, and type of laboratory analysis required The samples were stored on ice and transported with a
chain-of-custody record to state-certified Acculabs Inc ,in Davis,California Groundwater samples
from the baker tanks and UST pit excavation were analyzed for BTEX,MTBE, and TPH-G using EPA
methods 8020/modified 8015 , and total lead using EPA method 6010 Groundwater samples from the
UST pit excavation were also analyzed for the oxygenates MTBE, TBA, DIPE, ETRE, and TAME by
EPA method 8260
' 4.0 RESULTS
4.1 Geology
The relatively level sde is located at an elevation of approximately 2 feet above mean sea level
According to the California Division of Mines and Geology(Jennings, 1977)the site is underlain by
Quaternary alluvial deposits The materials encountered during recent drilling and during the UST pit
excavation at the site generally consisted of the alluvial silts and clays with some sands to the depths
explored
20632ust.rAMW)
FLUOR DANIEL 6111
