Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
Section 3: Field Activities
3.1 Field Preparation
Field preparation includes the following:
• Develop a site-specific Health and Safety Plan (HASP). The HASP for this investigation is
included in Appendix A.
• Obtain a boring permit from SJECHD.
• Make all necessary notifications and interactions with BNSF to comply with BNSF and FRA
railroad worker protection requirements.
• Mark the boring locations with white paint or stakes. Underground Service Alert (USA) will
be notified of sampling at least 48 hours in advance.
• In addition, the potential presence of underground utilities in the proposed drilling areas will
be assessed by a private contractor using non-invasive geophysical means.
• The drilling contractor will also provide a vacuum truck (an "air knife' device)to uncover any
utilities near the borings to verify the utilities' depth and orientation.
• Subcontract with a drilling contractor licensed in California.
• Arrange with a state-certified laboratory for analysis of the samples.
3.2 Soil Boring and Sample Collection
3.2.1 Soil Sample Identification
As discussed in Section 2, the proposed soil boring locations are shown on Figure 2. Samples
will be collected at three depths in each of the borings: 5 feet bgs, 10 feet bgs and 15 feet bgs. It
is assumed that groundwater will not be encountered.
Soil borings will be named with the prefix"KB" followed by a number; borings will be numbered
in the order they are drilled. Soil samples will be identified according to the boring name and
depth, e.g. KB-01-5 for a sample collected from the first boring at 5 feet bgs.
3.2.2 Drilling and Soil Sample Collection Methods
The soil borings will be drilled and continuously cored using a hydraulic push-drive drill rig in
general accordance with the Kennedy/Jenks Standard Operating Guideline (SOG) included in
Appendix B. Soil borings will be drilled to a maximum depth of 15 feet bgs unless visual
indications of petroleum hydrocarbon impact are noted. In these cases the borings will be
deepened to 20 feet bgs.
Soil Investigation Work Plan, Page 3
BNSF Mormon Yard, Stockton, California
g:ll Toupladminjob113113 DM.00_bndO&epMalsoiNnveA-w A-planbddm
