Task 1 - Field Activities
Stratus will obtain drilling permits from PHS-EHD prior to commencing field activities
and contact Underground Service Alert to identify and mark underground utilities in the
area of proposed boring. Procedures that will be implemented during field activities are
briefly summarized below and are detailed in Appendix A.
The proposed soil boring will be located in the vicinity of MW-13 and MW-14, and will
be drilled to a total depth of 100 feet bgs (figure 2). It is anticipated that the boring can
be completed by using a drill rig equipped with hollow-stem augers. If field observations
suggest that impact extends beyond that depth, Stratus will continue drilling and sample
collection until no further hydrocarbon evidence is present or until the limits of the
drilling equipment are reached.
Soil samples will not be collected from the upper 30 feet since soil within this region
consists of clean backfill which was placed after over excavation activities. Samples will
be collected between the depth of 30 to 90 feet bgs at 40, 50, 55, 65, 75, and 85 feet bgs.
These collection depths were selected based on the results of samples collected and
analyzed from MW-13 and MW-14. Beginning at 90 feet bgs, soil samples will be
collected every 5 feet. Soil samples will be collected by using a modified California split-
spoon sampler and classified using the Unified Soil Classification System. The soil samples
will be field screened for the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons using a flame
ionization detector. Samples submitted for analyses will be based on field screening and
physical observations.
Soil generated during the drilling will be stockpiled on and covered with plastic sheeting.
A soil sample will be collected from the stockpile for laboratory analysis and disposal
purposes. The soil boring will be backfilled to the surface with bentonite/cement grout.
Task 2 - Laboratory Analysis
We estimate that a total of 6 soil samples collected from the soil boring will be submitted
to a state-certified laboratory for analyses. The stockpile sample will also be submitted
for analysis. The samples will be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline
(TPHG); benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX) using
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Method 8015/8020 Modified; and
oxygenates using USEPA Method 8260. Samples will be submitted for standard turn
around.
Task 3 - Data Evaluation and Report Preparation
Stratus will prepare an investigation report following completion of field activities and
receipt of analytical results. The report will summarize the field work performed, present
Teichert-work plan 2
