16 <br /> GENERAL SAFE WORK PRACTICES <br /> tThe project operations shall be conducted with the minimum safety prac- <br /> tices described below required for EMCON Associates employees. <br />' General Safety Practices for Personnel <br /> 1 . Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, smoking, or <br /> any practice that increases the probability of hand-to- <br /> mouth transfer and ingestion of materials is prohibited in <br /> any area where the possibility of contamination exists. <br /> 2. Hands must be thoroughly washed when leaving a con- <br /> taminated, or suspected, contaminated area before eat- <br /> ing, drinking, or any other activities. <br /> 3. Contaminated protective equipment shall not be removed <br /> from the regulated area until it has been properly con- <br /> tainerized on site. <br /> 4. Removal of materials from protective clothing or equip- <br /> ment by blowing, shaking, or any means which may dis- <br /> perse materials into the air, is prohibited. <br /> 5. Personnel on site must use the "buddy" system when <br />' wearing any respiratory protective devices. Communica- <br /> tion between members must be maintained at all times. <br /> Emergency communication shall be prearranged in case <br /> unexpected situations arise. Visual contact must be <br /> maintained between "pairs" on site, and each team mem- <br /> ber should remain close enough to assist each other in an <br />' emergency. <br /> 6. Personnel should be cautioned to inform each other of <br /> subjective symptoms of chemical exposure such as <br /> headache, dizziness, nausea, and irritation of the respira- <br /> tory tract. <br /> 7. No excessive facial hair which interferes with a satisfac- <br /> tory fit of the face-piece-to-face seal will be allowed on <br /> personnel required to wear respiratory protective equip- <br /> ment (NIOSH). <br />' pif1f921f920201 a A - 4 Rev. 0 June 1, 1992 <br />
