' Report-Soil and Groundwater Investigation
Herman&Helen's Marina
September 30, 1996
Page-6-
Two (2) additional soil samples were retained from selected boreholes for geotechnical
' analyses. The soil samples were capped, wrapped with duct tape, and labeled. The sample I.D.'s
are as follows: 1432-GP1-8' and 1432-GP3-10'. The geotechnical samples were shipped, under
' chain-of-custody procedures, to Cooper Testing Laboratory of Mountain View, California.
' 3.4 Groundwater Sampling
The Geoprobe groundwater sampler is designed to be hydraulically pushed into the aquifer
from the bottom of a borehole, to collect a groundwater sample from a discrete zone (see Appendix B
for a description of the Geoprobe groundwater sampling system). The sampler utilizes a sealed,
water-tight, stainless steel sample chamber and PVC screen which is isolated from the surrounding
' environment as the sampler is advanced. When the desired depth for collection of a groundwater
sample was reached, the sample chamber was opened by pulling back on the body of the sampler,
texposing the screen. When the screen was full, a small diameter teflon tube was lowered into the push
rod and a groundwater sample was retrieved by use of a peristaltic pump equipped with a rubber
sleeve. The teflon tubing and rubber sleeve were discarded after each sample was collected.
' The groundwater samples were inspected for free product, petroleum odor, and sheen. Each
sample was gently poured into two (2) 40-m1 glass volatile organic analyses (VOA) vials, and one (1)
' 1-liter amber glass bottle. The sample containers were sealed, labeled, and placed in a cooler
chilled with ice for delivery under chain-of-custody procedures to GeoAnalytical Laboratories, in
Modesto, California for analyses.
' 3.5 Chemical Analysis
The soil and groundwater samples collected for chemical analysis were analyzed for benzene,
ttoluene, ethyl benzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020 (602 for water), for total
petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-G) by Method 5030/LUFT, for total extractable
' petroleum hydrocarbons, quantified as diesel, motor oil, and kerosene (TEPH) by Method
3505/LUFT (3015/LUFT for water), and for methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) by EPA Method
' 8020 and 8260. The results of the soil and groundwater analyses are presented in Sections 3.5.1 and
3.5.2, below.
t M CONDOR
