V
29 September 2003
• AGE-NC Project No 99-0654
I Soil samples were preserved by covering both ends of the second brass sleeve with Teflon sheets,
capping and sealing with tape Each preserved sample sleeve was labeled with soil boring location,
depth, time, date and sampler's initials and was stored in a chilled container under ice
Soil samples retrieved from the borings were visually classified on a boring log by an AGE geologist
in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System(USCS), the soil bonng log is provided
in Appendix B Additionally, the soil samples were field-screened for the presence of volatile
organic compounds using an organic vapor meter(OVM)equipped with a photo-ionization detector
(PID Thermo Environmental 580A, 10 0 eV,calibrated to isobutylene), the concentration readings
were recorded on the boring lob
2 3 GRAB GROUND WATER COLLECTION
Ground water was encountered at a depth of 40 feet bsg in each probe boring, a grab ground water
sample was collected utilizing a Geoprobe water sampling assembly fitted with a pre-cleaned one-
inch diameter 0 01-inch slotted temporary well screen The ground water sample was extracted by
• lowering a Teflon hose equipped with a ball-valve through the hollow center of the push rods into
the screen section The sample was collected in.three EPA-approved 40-m1 VOA vials containing
0 5 ml 18% hydrochloric acid as a sample preservative The collected ground water samples were
labeled with the boring designation, date, time, and sampler's initials and placed in a chilled
container under ice
2 4 LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF SOIL AND GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLES
' The grab ground water sample and selected soil samples were transported under chain-of-custody
procedures to Cal Tech Environmental Laboratories, a California Department of Health Services
(DHS)-certified laboratory, for analyzed for
' • Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015 Modified, and
' • Benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene and xylenes(BTEX)and methyl tertiary-butyl ether(MTBE)
in accordance with EPA Method 8260M
' • The fuel additives MTBE, di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE),
tertiary-amyl methyl ether(TAME), tertiary butanol(TBA), ethylene dibromide(EDB)and
1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) in accordance with EPA Method 8260M
1 '
' Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc-
'
