J -
It is the intent if this H & SP to supply the broad outline for completing investigation and
remediation activities within ALARA guidelines . It should be clearly understood that it
may not be possible to determine the actual working conditions in advance of the work.
Therefore , planning must allow the opportunity to provide a range of protection based
upon actual working conditions.
All project work shall be preformed in a manner consistent with providing a safe work
environment. A list of general safety guidelines which are applicable include :
• Wear appropriate protective clothing for the job, including , but not limited to hard
hats, work clothing , safety boots , traffic vests , work gloves and eye protection .
• Decontaminate known sources of contamination (such as gloves and boots) at the
location established for decontamination . Remove equipment only after
decontamination or containerization .
• Keep track of weather conditions and wind direction when working outside.
• Plan activities thoroughly ahead of time: enter work sites by a designated route only
to get to a designated point for a specific purpose.
• Always observe the buddy system : never enter or exit alone and never work alone
in an isolated area .
• Shower thoroughly, as soon as possible , after removing protective equipment.
Wash hands thoroughly upon leaving an area of suspected contamination .
• Never assume that a working area is as safe as it appears to be.
Be alert to any unusual behavior on the part of other workers which might indicate
distress , disorientation or other ill effects. Be alert to any unusual change in your
own condition ; never ignore warning signs or hesitate to report them at once .
Inform each other of symptoms of nausea , dizziness, headache or reparatory or
eye irritation .
• Maintain a clean and organized work area .
Label raw materials, debris, scrap, waste, intermediate and contaminated clothing
with appropriate and understandable precautionary labels.
Environeering, Inc.
