' Report-Pilot Remedial System Test Page 12
Fortner Manna Pro Site
' Project No 2011
July 31,2000
' 4.0 PILOT TESTING SYSTEM INSTALLATION & OPERATION
4.1 Pilot System installation
The equipment for the pilot system was installed after the pilot testing wells and the ORC
boring had been constructed On May 20, 2000, Del-Tech Geo-Technical Services
mobilized to site to install the pilot testing equipment The pilot system included an
Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) for the extraction and combustion of hydrocarbon
containing vapor from the vapor extraction well
Initially, a electrically powered rotary blower was used for supplying air to the air sparge
' well It was determined in the field, however, that the blower would not develop
sufficient pressure to adequately pressurize the sparge well Subsequently, a 1 5
horsepower air compressor was used to in inject air into the sparge well A limiting
orifice and flow control rotameter provided control for the air volume being infected
In order to monitor the radius of influence of the vapor extraction / air sparge system the
' two nearby air monitoring wells were equipped with magnahelic gauges to measure
vacuum in the well casing at each well head During the operation of the air sparge
system, well head pressure also was measured at OB-3
4.1,1 Internal Combustion Engine ICE Installation
g (ICE)
iThe internal combustion engine was a six cylinder, propane powered engine with a
vacuum pump capable of producing approximately 120 cubic feet per minute of air flaw
and produce a vacuum of 6 to 8 inches of mercury The ICE was fueled by portable
propane tanks The ICE was connected to the well by a two inch conductor pipe A four
inch to two inch reducer coupling and two inch conductor pipe extended from the well to
' the ICE A dilute air ball valve was installed in the ICE intake pipe to control the vacuum
applied to the vapor extraction well
' 4.1.2 Sparge Pump Installation
Initially a sparge pump consisting of a 5 5 horsepower regenerative blower was attached
' to the air sparge well to provide sparge air for the well After installation, it was
discovered that the blower was not capable of delivering the 8 to 9 psig required to
overcome the hydrostatic head of the water in the sparge well Subsequently a
' compressor with a 440 volt, 3-phase motor was installed The compressor was capable of
producing over 5 scfm of air flow at the face of the screened interval at the bottom of the
well The pilot air sparge pump was be connected to the well by a 3/4 inch flexible hose
' A 0-3 SUM range limiting orifice rotameter was used to measure and regulate air flow
' 2937 Veneman Ave, #B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc Phone(209) 569-0293
Modesto,CA 95356 Fax (209) 569-0295
