During the course of field search for cultural resources, technicians are alert to the possible presence of a wide variety, i; of archaeological and historical cultural resources that prefield research indicates are likely, or are known, to be present on the < proposed project area. Special attention is given to areas in drainageways and near springs and drainage confluences, and to ridge crests, knolls, bare ground, and other locations that prefield research indicates might have been suitable for human occupation, as evidenced by the presence of village sites, resource utilization sites, and/or various types of historic sites. Attention is given to historic remains such as barns, windmills, developed springs, rock walls, and other features. Natural features, such- as outcrops and boulders, are examined inr` search of bedrock mortar milling cups, which prefield sensitivity assessment might indicate as likely to be present on a proposed project area. Subsurface soil exposed in drainageways, roadcuts - rodent burrows and other locations is examined, and trowel tests are made in specific locations, but shovel tests or other types of excavations are not undertaken unless required, as determined . on ,a proposed project-specific basis. Cultural resources are recorded on standard forms (State of California DPR 422 A or H, Rev. 4/86) or DPR 523-Test (12/93) . Photographs are taken and field maps of the cultural resources are drafted. Site locations are plotted on U.S. Geological Survey . � G (USGS) quadrangles and on project-specific maps, as available.
