Species listed as
endangered or threatened are protected either by the Federal
Endangered Species Act and designated here as FE or FT, or by
California's Endangered Species Act and designated CE or CT in
this section. In addition there are a number of animal species
which, though not presently protected by law, are being
considered for such protection. At the federal level these are
Candidate 1 (FC1) species (a group for which there is sufficient
data to support an endangered or threatened listing) and
Candidate 2 (FC2) species (those for which such data is still
being collected) . In California there is also a relatively large
list of state species of special concern (CSC) which are being
closely watched and evaluated for possible inclusion on the
state's endangered or threatened species lists.
In addition the the state and federal endangered and threatened
species designation for plants , the California Native Plant
= Society (CLAPS) also uses these designations in two biannually
published lists. The first (CNPS1) denotes those protected
species which are rare , threatened, or endangered both in
California and elsewhere. The second (CNPS2) are those in these
categories only in California since they are more numerous
► elsewhere. A third grouping (CNPS3) identifies those for which
more information is needed, and a fourth category (CNPS4) is a
"watch list" of species with limited distribution.
t Table I. Special status species which have geographic ranges
that include or come close to the project site was compiled from
the California Natural Diversity Base, the Resources Agency's
1994 Annual Report on the Status of California's State Listed
+ Threatened and Endangered Plants and Wildlife, and from the
California Native Plant Society's 1992 published listings.
Y' y Common Name- Scientific Name Status
Plants
Large-flowered Amsinckia grandiflora FE,SE
fiddleneck CNPS1
Animals
Peregrine falcon Falco peregrinus anatum FE, CE
4 San Joaquin kit fox Vulpes macrotis mutica FE,ST
Vernal pool crustaceans (species citations in text) FE,FT
Swainson's Hawk Buteo swainsoni CT
Valley elderberry Desmocerus californicus CT
r longhorn beetle dimorphus
California tiger Ambystoma californiense FCI,CSC
salamander
4 4
