Former storm water holding pond areas will be reclaimed in accordance with the approved
reclamation plan.
4.0 SURFACE WATER DRAINAGE AND DRAINAGE CONTROL FACILITIES
KRC prevents storm water runoff from the active portions of the site through the use of
drainage control and holding facilities. Further, contamination of storm water is prevented
by minimizing storm water contact with contaminant sources.
4.1 Quarry Runoff Controls
Excavation in the Quarry has been conducted such that storm water runoff will flow into a
holding pond rather than through the active quarry to a surface water drainage. In the event
that the active quarry receives sufficient water that the holding pond capacity is
overwhelmed, pollution prevention personnel (see Section 5.1) will pump water into
makeup water settling ponds for storage. Figure 3 shows drainage control facilities
associated with the Quarry.
Material stockpiles in the handling and loading areas within the Quarry are unprotected
from contact with storm water. Storm water is, however, contained within the Quarry as
described above. The natural water content of the aggregates tends to minimize the
generation of dust during excavation operations and thus minimize the potential spread of
airborne dust outside of containment and control areas. Haul roads and access roads are
watered to control dust.
4.2 Plant Runoff Controls
The earthen area around the plant has been graded to slope towards the centerline of the
plant. Product stockpiles are within the outer drainage control berm. Surface storm water
coming into contact with the stockpiles drains to the slab area. The concrete slab underlying
the plant is outfitted with a drainage network as depicted in Figure 5. Area drains are tied
together via a 12-inch diameter pipe which daylights to the secondary settling pond west of
the plant. Storm water which does not enter the area adjacent to the plant flows via surface
drainage swales to the secondary settling pond.
Materials that have been treated and stored in the area include finished product, by-product
and waste product. Make-up water used in the processing operations is also treated and
stored in the ponds to the west of the plant. Material loading and unloading in the Plant
area is limited to that associated with movement of the various products to the truck loading
area, and relocation of stockpiles and waste product. The generation of dust during Plant
operations is minimized by continued wetting of the aggregate being processed, as well as
5txm Water Management Plan-HRC Aggepte Inc
B5H Ptoj.d Na 592104.2 6
Pe iacd January 1994
