Projeet-specific Health and Safety Plan: 7500 ff'est Eleventh Street, Tracy, California Page 2 of 5
Known Hazards:
The principal hazards expected to be encountered on this project are those common to
earth-moving work and geotechnical site investigations on land where the subsurface is
affected by releases of fuel hydrocarbons,.
j
General Hazards
j
{ Typical hazards associated with geotechnical drilling include the potential for: pinching
injuries of the extremities, entanglement of extremities and clothing in rotating
A machinery, exposure to moderate noise from machinery, tripping hazards, and strains due
to lifting heavy objects.
= Typical hazards associated with earth-moving operations such as those that will be
required to effect remediation of stockpiled soil present on the site include: crushing
injuries due to being overrun by heavy construction equipment, pinching injuries of the
t>:.a extremities, entanglement of extremities and clothing in moving parts of heavy
machinery, exposure to noise from machinery, tripping hazards, and strains due to lifting
heavy objects.
Chemical Hazards
' Eight underground storage tanks and their associated piping beneath the site were
removed in December 1998. Soil and groundwater in the subsurface beneath the subject
property is known to be contaminated by gasoline and diesel. Gasoline and diesel may
contain fractional components that are known to be human carcinogens. They also
contain compounds that may injure human respiratory, hepatic, renal functions, and the
central nervous system. If there is exposure to high concentrations of the vapors of these
Q
fuels for ]onperiods, dermal and eye injuries can also be sustained, especially if contact
.l , p Y p Y
is made with the compounds in liquid form or with waste materials that are highly
saturated with these materials.
Small quantities of commonly-used agricultural acidic soil amendments, lime and
fertilizers containing phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen may be used as part of the soil
remediation procedure. If ingested, these may induce a variety of toxic effects; however,
if properly handled, pose little risk to project personnel.
Specific Health and Safety Requirements:
The work required for this project is not known to involve special hazards beyond those
covered by the standard requirements of The San Joaquin Company Ine.'s Master Heath
Health anis Safety Plats, incorporated herein by reference. All work will be conducted in
{ compliance with the applicable policies, safety rules and safe working practices set out in
that Master Plan, a copy of which is on file with SJCHCSA. However, for emphasis, the
{` following specific requirements are cited.
sic
; 3
