Escalon Subdivision
Page 3
May 30,2000
III FIELD EXPLORATION AND LABORATORY TESTING
The field investigation consisted of excavating seven (7) exploratory test holes carried to
depths of 10 to 15 feet. A second boring was drilled next to the exploratory boring to perform
percolation test required by San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division further described
in a soil suitability report conducted by Anderson &Assoc.' Test holes were drilled with a truck
mounted Deep Rock drill rig, utilizing 4.5 inch continuous flight auger. The location of the test
` holes is shown on the location map, Plate No. 1. The location of the test holes was determined by
pacing; hence, accuracy can be implied only to the degree that this method warrants.
r
Sampling of seven (7) test holes (B-1 through B-7) was performed at various depths by a
California Modified 2.5-inch o.d. split spoon sampler with stainless steel tube liners. The sampler
was driven by a 140-pound hammer with a 30-inch drop. Blow counts required to drive the sampler
every 6 inches for a total depth of 18 inches were recorded and a summary of the blow counts
required to drive the sampler the last 12 inches is presented on the Log of Boring sheets, Plates No.
r 2 through 6. Sampling and logging of B-3 was performed by collecting and examining grab samples
off the auger. This boring was completed into a temporary 10-foot deep percolation test hole.
Relatively undisturbed soil samples obtained from the test holes were preserved until the
samples could be tested in the laboratory. Samples were taken to the laboratory of Neil O.Anderson
& Associates, Inc., Lodi, California and used for performing various laboratory tests. Tests
performed consisted of unit weights and moisture contents of soil samples. A summary of the test
results is presented on the Log of Boring sheets.
Two bulk samples of the subgrade soil were obtained for performing R-value tests(see Plate
I for approximate locations). The samples were obtained from the 12 to 18 inch depth. The results
` of the R-value tests indicate values of 38 and 42 for the subgrade soil consisting ofbrown silty sand.
6. IV SOIL CONDITIONS
Visual classification according to ASTM D2488 (Visual - Manual Procedure) of each soil
stratum encountered was made in the field by an engineer at the time the test holes were drilled. The
samples obtained were checked in the laboratory and classification verified according to ASTM
D2487. A classification and graphical representation of each soil encountered is presented on the
Log of Boring sheets. The test boring legend is presented on Plate No. 9.
s Neil O.Anderson&Associates,2000,Soil Suitability Study, 70-Acre Major Subdivision,Magnolia and
Campbell Avenue,Escalon,California.
