The access agreement
will be executed between Shell and the property owners and will allow access for
subsequent on-site activities required for the subsurface investigation.
3.2 SURVEY OF PIPELINE ROUTE
Clayton proposes to contract a California-licensed land surveyor to mark the former
pipeline alignment where it crosses the subject parcels based on existing drawings of the
former pipeline route. Clayton reviewed Shell Oil Company drawings that show the
former pipeline route through Sections 8 and 16. The drawings indicate that the two
pipeline trenches are about 3 feet apart. It should be noted that the pipelines have been
found up to about 10 feet apart along some sections of the route farther to the northwest
in Neighborhood E.
To confirm that the information provided on the drawings is correct, the survey markings
will be used to guide trenching activities to physically locate the former pipeline trenches.
If the pipeline route is found to vary significantly from the mapped locations, the survey
contractor will be recalled to survey the actual former pipeline alignment, as needed.
3:3 TRENCHING ACTIVITIES
Clayton proposes to conduct trenching activities using a backhoe to physically locate the
former pipeline trenches. The backhoe trenches will be excavated perpendicular to the
marked pipeline route to a depth of approximately 6 feet below the ground surface(bgs)
at approximate 500 foot intervals(between 15 and 20 locations) along the alignment.
This depth is believed to be sufficient to locate the former pipeline trenches. Key
trenches will be located where alignment changes are indicated along the former route.
The proposed locations of the trenches are shown on Figure 2. Clayton will mark the
proposed trenching locations and the site boundaries with white paint and notify
Underground Service Alert (USA) to clear an area approximately 100 feet wide along the
former pipeline route at least 48 hours prior to commencement of any subsurface
fieldwork, as required by law.
Once the former pipeline trenches are identified, the trenches will be logged and
photographed. Excavated soils will be stockpiled at each trench area for reuse to backfill
the trenches after the trenches have been logged and the pipeline alignment and depth
confirmed. If petroleum hydrocarbons are found in the excavated soil by visual or
r olfactory means, the soil will not be reused in the excavation but will be stockpiled on
plastic sheeting pending proper disposal. The trenching contractor will subsequently
