Q
conducted on both sides of Koster Road along the edges of the raised roadbed. The
Alternative 2 roadway was also surveyed along an approximately 100 foot marked
corridor. Alternative 3, the Bird Road access road was not surveyed as permission to
enter the private property was denied. However, a portion of the access road was
surveyed for the Vernalis Interchange project with negative findings.
S..rface visibility in the quarry Parcel ranged fromgood:to fair. A light to dense cover
01 grasses and other ground cover obscured surface visibility. Surface visibility along
the proposed northern access route was very good as it had been recently disced. The
surface visibility of the Koster Road access route was fair along the shoulder though it
has been heavily disturbed by its current use and maintenance of the roadbed.
Surface and subsurface disturbance was observed throughout the study area. In
addition to unmaintained and paved road construction and maintenance, the quarry
location site was previously a maintained apricot orchard. In the northern two thirds
of the 143 acre parcel the apricot trees have been removed by mechanical means
resulting in large mounded holes where the trees once stood. In the southern one third
of the parcel, the apricot orchard has been left intact. The ground in this area is covered
w!th dense to moderately dense grasses which resulted in fair ground surface visibility.
Visibility in the southwest corner of the parcel was good as the area around the homes
has been disced. Careful attention was paid to rodent burrows and tree holes for the
presence of cultural materials. Parts of the parcel are currently used for sheep grazing.
InIthe southwest corner are several buildings including one home and a storage shed.
Tio trailers are also within the residence area (Figure 2). In summary, the landform
has been altered by agricultural activities, year-round water sources are absent, and
very little native vegetation remains with the project area. U
1.
Survey Results
No prehistoric or historic resources were discovered during the survey. The soil
contains abundant unmodified subangular and subrounded chert pebbles and cobbles.
T Wo small cobbles were noted with flake-like removals,:however this appears to be the
result of machinery (e.g. plow) and not cultural modification. One potential historic
property is located among the residences at the southwest corner of the property. This
is the residence. The home is built on a cement slab and has at least one addition. An
informant, Gary Lopez who resides on the property, lived in the house as a child. He
indicated that the house had been there for quite some time before he lived there (he is
now 40). As such this home may be 50 years or older. None of the other structures on
the property appear to be of a similar age, all are more recent.
}
M i nagement Recommendations
Tl ie record search and literature review at the CCIC revealed that no previously
recorded ethnographic, prehistoric or historic archaeological sites are located within
.
C..\ARCHAEOL\KOSTER\SRVYREPR.WPD DRAFT Koster Road Quarry Archaeolog"I Survey
March 13,1W7 4
