1.Approach and Scope of Work
Geology, Soils and Seismicity
Issues
The project site is located along a flat segment of alluvial valley sediments,
located approximately 25 feet above sea level(msl). Most of the active faults
located in the vicinity of the project site are located along the eastern flank of
the San Francisco Bay Area, with some additional faulting in the Sierra
Nevada Mountains,to the east of the Project. The Great Valley Fault runs
somewhat closer to the Project area, and could result in seismicity as near as
approximately 25 miles from the project site.Potential geologic hazards on site
include ground shaking and liquefaction, while landslides and slope failures
would be less likely to occur due to flat topography. Soils on site are generally
sandy to loamy, and could be subject to erosion during construction.
Tasks
• ESA's geologic resources analysts will review available information
regarding the location of faults and historic earthquake events in the
vicinity of the Project area, including historic and pre-historic fault
activity along Bay Area faults, Sierra Nevada faults, and the Great
Valley Fault complex.
• Assess potential for seismic hazards to occur on site based on
information d re
ac uifrom previous bullet; ensure minimization of
q
potential impacts via compliance with relevant building code and
county/state seismic standards, and application of additional mitigation if
warranted.
' • Review soils data available from NRCS, the County,on-site and nearby
geologic tests as available, and other soils data sources to determine
potential for liquefaction, erosion, expansive soils, unstable soils, and
corrosive soils on site. Implement standard mitigation strategies to ensure
that soils related impacts are minimized.
Assumptions
ESA assumes that the Applicant will provide existing reports and other
available data pertaining to on site soil conditions,to the extent available.
These may include previous geologic testing, geotechnical reports, or other
information completed for the project site, or in support of the existing rail
I yard.
1'24 San Joaquin County—E!R for the Union Pacific Modernization Project
