Methomyl is effective in two ways: (a)as a"contact insecticide,",killing target insects upon direct contact, and (b) as a "systemic insecticide" because of its capability to cause overall "systemic" poisoning in target insects. It is capable of being absorbed by plants without being "phytotoxic" or harmful, to the plant. Methomyl is highly toxic by ingestion, moderately toxic by inhalation and slightly toxic by dermal exposure; it is generally toxic to fish, aquatic invertebrates, birds and bees and mammals. It has no suspected teratogen, carcinogenic or mutagenic effects in humans. Methomyl has low persistence in the soil environment,with a reported half-life of approximately 14 days. Because of its high solubility in water, and low affinity for soil binding,methomyl may have _ potential for groundwater contamination.
