`ftm- -4./
31 August 2004
AGE-NC Project No.04-1188
ROUNDUP(glyphosate): This compound in toxicity class H and must carry the label WARNING.
_ Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum, nonselective systemic herbicide used for control of annual and
perennial plants including grasses;it is an acid normally used as a salt.Glyphosate is nontoxic to test
animals by oral and dermal routes of exposure but may have some inhalation toxicity. There are no
suspected teratogenic, carcinogenic or mutagenic effects.
Glyphosate is moderately persistent in soil, with an estimated average half-life of 47 days. Even
though it is highly soluble in water, field and laboratory studies show it does not leach appreciably,
and has low potential for runoff(except as adsorbed to colloidal matter);one estimate indicated that
less than 2% of the applied chemical is lost to runoff. Microbes are primarily responsible for the
breakdown of the product, and volatilization or photodegradation losses will be negligible. In water,
glyphosate is strongly adsorbed to suspended organic and mineral matter and is broken down
primarily by microorganisms; its half-life in pond water ranges from 12 days to 10 weeks.
SENCOR DF HERBICIDE fMetribuzin): This compound is a General Use Pesticide(GUP) in
toxicity class III - slightly toxic. Metribuzin is a selective triazine herbicide which inhibits
photosynthesis of susceptible plant species; it is used for control of annual grasses and numerous
broadleaf weeds. It is slightly toxic to test animals by oral and dermal routs and is nontoxic by
inhalation routes. There are no suspected teratogenic, carcinogenic or mutagenic effects.
Metribuzin is of moderate persistence in the soil environment. The half-life of metribuzin varies
according to soil type and climatic conditions; soil half-lives of 30 to 120 days have been reported;
a representative value may be approximately 60 days.Metribuzin is poorly bound to most soils and
soluble in water, giving it a potential for leaching in many soil types. Soil mobility is affected by
many site-specific variables, including the amount of soil organic matter, particle size distribution,
porosity, rainfall, and application rates. The major mechanism by which metribuzin is lost from soil
is microbial degradation. The half-life of metribuzin in pond water is approximately 7 days; if
present, it would most likely be found in the water column rather than the sediment, due to its low
binding affinity and high water solubility.
SULFUR: Sulfur is a general use pesticide(GUP);a non-systemic contact and protectant fungicide
used on both plants and animals. Sulfur is known to be of low toxicity, and poses very little if any
risk to human and animal health. Sulfur is a component of the environment, and there is a natural
cycle of oxidation and reduction reactions which transforms sulfur into both organic and inorganic
products.
TRI-AD 73: A nonylophenyl polyetheylene phosphate ester used as a general purpose spreader-
sticker for all types of spraying operations. The EPA lists such products as inert.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
