`W
_ 31 August 2004
AGE-NC Project No.04-1188
TRI-FOL BUFFER: An acidifier and buffering agent for lowering the pH of spray water that
utilizes organic acids instead of corrosive mineral acids It is nontoxic to test animals by oral, dermal,
and inhalation routes of normal exposure and has no suspected teratogen, carcinogenic or mutagenic
effects.
TRIFLURALIN 4 EC: This compound is a General Use Pesticide (GUP) in toxicity class III -
slightly toxic.Trifluralin is a selective,pre-emergence dinitroaniline herbicide used to control many
.. annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. Pre-emergence herbicides are applied before weed seedlings
sprout.
Trifluralin is nontoxic to test animals by oral, dermal, and inhalation routes of exposure and has no
suspected teratogen, carcinogenic or mutagenic effects in humans; it is toxic to aquatic organisms
in high concentrations. Trifluralin is of moderate to high persistence in the soil environment;
reported half-lives in the soil vary from 45 to 60 days Trifluralin is nearly insoluble in water.
TRILIN HERBICIDE: See TRIFLURALIN 4 EC.
WEEDAR 64 (2,4-D DMA): A General Use Pesticide (GUP) in toxicity class III- slightly toxic
orally, but toxicity class I- highly toxic by eye exposure; it bears the word DANGER - POISON
because 2,4-D has produced serious eye and skin irritation among agricultural workers. Used for
broadleaf weed control; the main ingredients are acetic acid and dimethylamine salts. Weedar is
harmful via ingestion and inhalation and a slight irritant via skin contact. It is not considered to be
mutagenic or teratogenic but there is conflict concerning carcinogenic properties with prolonged
exposure.
2,4-D has low soil persistence, with a half-life in soil of less than 7 days;soil microbes are primarily
responsible for its disappearance Despite its short half-life in soil and in aquatic environments, the
compound has been detected in groundwater supplies in at least five states in Canada. In aquatic
environments, microorganisms readily degrade 2,4-D. Rates of breakdown increase with increased
nutrients, sediment load, and dissolved organic carbon;under oxygenated conditions the half-life is
•. 1 week to several weeks
6.1.2.
