Subsurface Environmental Investigation November 29 , 1988
ARCO Services Station 760, Lodi, California AGS 38048-1
Following removal of the tank, Applied GeoSystems ' geologist
noted evidence of soil contamination including discernible
hydrocarbon odor and visible discoloration. Additional
excavation was undertaken in an attempt to remove visibly
contaminated soil. Approximately 4 to 5 cubic yards of soil were
excavated and stockpiled at the station. Excavated soil was
placed on plastic sheeting and covered. This soil was removed
from the site on September 16, 1988 and taken by Universal
Engineering to the Kettleman Hills Class I disposal facility.
Following excavation of 4 to 5 cubic yards of visibly
contaminated soil, Applied GeoSystems was directed by Mr. Knoll
of the SJLHD to cease additional excavation. At that time,
visibly contaminated soil remained at the bottom and in the
sidewalls of the excavation. Mr. Knoll indicated that a Soil
Remediation Work Plan would be required before the SJLHD would
permit additional excavation. One soil sample was then collected
from an approximate depth of 8 feet in the excavation, or 2 feet
below the base of and adjacent to the fill port end of the former
tank. The native soil consisted of sandy silt. Because of
safety considerations, ARCO requested that the excavation be
backfilled with clean, imported pea gravel.
