®, CAUTION
Xerxes'personnel are not trained or qualified to perform inert gas purging. This
process should only be performed by individuals who have been trained to perform
this line of work. Field service personnel who are asked to work on a tank that has
product in it must first call their plant manager for specific instructions. Likewise,
plant managers should call the corporate engineering services department in
Minneapolis at 952-887-1890 for guidance before proceeding. Failure to do so may
result in minor or moderate injury.
6.3.2.1.2. the oxygen level inside the inerted tank(s) is below 5%;
6.3.2.1.3. the initial flammable vapor concentrations outside the inerted tank and around
manways, tank fractures, cracks, vents and other openings are determined; If you record
vapor levels above 0% LEL, refer to Table 1 for specific directions.
i44L WARN II NG
A combustible gas indicator will not function properly when oxygen levels drop
below 10%. Do not rely on the combustible gas indicator if oxygen levels drop below
10% from inerting. Failure to do so could result in death or serious injury.
6.3.2.1.4. the possibility of sparks and ignition sources from physically entering the tank or
from reaching areas where vapors could migrate to are eliminated; Common ignition
sources include: sparks from grinding and sanding, open flames, internal combustion
engines, lightning, smoking, non-explosion proof electrical equipment including radios,
non-approved cell phones and pagers, and electric short circuits caused by worn or
defective extension cords.
,A WARN I NG
As the tank is freed of vapors by inerting, dilution of vapors will occur near tank
openings such as manways, hatches, vents or other openings where air mixes with
vapor. These areas may be within the explosive range. Keep all potential ignition
sources away from these areas. Failure to do so could result in death or serious
injury.
7.0. AT THE JOBSITE - WORKING ON THE INTERIOR OF TANKS
(TANK ENTRY REQUIRED)
7.1. General
7.1.1. Safe confined-space (tank-entry) work requires a coordinated effort between the
authorized tank entrant(s), the attendant, other crew members, and contractor
representatives.
20
