• SCOPE OF WORK
Planning and Permits
Smith Technology has completed the soil boring permit application for the proposed subsurface
investigation. The permit application and associated fees (check no. 1161) are attached to this
workplan. Smith Technology will also' schedule field personnel and equipment, notify
Underground Service Alert to locate underground utilities as required, and perform any other
necessary field preparation and job start-up activities.
Advancement of Sail Borin s
To determine the extent of potential soil contamination at the site, three soil borings will be
advanced to approximately 30 feet below ground surface (bgs). Two of the borings will be placed
inside the excavation area of the former USTs at the approximate locations where the 1987 soil
samples were collected. The third boring will be placed in the estimated downgradient direction
of groundwater flow from the former USTs. Proposed boring locations are shown on Figure 2.
The three borings will be advanced to using truck mounted Geoprobe® narrow diameter, direct
push technology. Drilling will be conducted by a State-licensed (C57) drilling company. A field
geologist will be present to log all drill cuttings and soil samples. Descriptions of soil types
encountered and sample collection intervals will be recorded on boring logs. Soil samples will be
collected at five foot intervals, field screened with a Photoionization Detection (PID) meter, and
up to two samples from each of the three borings will be submitted for laboratory analysis. Soil
sample selection will be based on PID measurements and field observations (i.e. odor and soil
discoloration).
Following soil sample collection, the borings will be backfilled with neat cement grout to the
ground surface. All drill cuttings, if any, will be stored on-site in a 5-gallon container pending
laboratory results.
Soil Sample Analysis
Selected soil samples will be immediately placed on ice and delivered udder chain-of-custody
documentation to a State-certified laboratory for analysis. Samples will be analyzed for total
petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel and gasoline (TPHd and TPHg) using EPA Method 8015
Modified, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) using EPA Method 8020, and
methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) using EPA Method 8020 and total lead.
w:1977361reportslwkp.doc 7!11197 2
