1
3. MTBE is the contaminant of concern at-this site. The mass calculated in
the soil and ground water is low and the concentrations in the
I groundwater samples collected in September 2003 were much reduced.
The concentrations of MTBE in groundwater have not been consistent
over time. END staff was present in December when the last sample
collection occurred. Christy boxes are not watertight and surface water is
entering the boxes and possibly some of the monitoring wells. All wells
should be inspected and ensured to be free from surface contamination.
Also precautions should be taken when sampling the wells to ensure that
there is no cross contamination. It is imperative that there is confidence in
site data prior to remediation being performed. The levels of MTBE in
MWO-2 are low and without a receptor within 2000 feet of the site, this
contamination may only require definition not remediation. If as the
responsible parties you want to move forward with remediation that has
not been shown to be necessary, please provide notification in writing that
you want to perform th',e work and will not request reimbursement from the
CleanupFund for the cost of the work.
I will be out of the office until February 23, 2004, so please send all
documents to Nuel Henderson during this time and contact him for permit
issuance and site inspections.
t _
DATED BY
c: CVRWQCB =Jim Barton
Stratus=Gowri Kowtha
i
a
