attached.
No odors consistent with anthropogenic hydrocarbons were noted
during placement of the borings, nor was groundwater encountered.
Following sample acquisition and withdrawal of the probe, each
of the borings was backfilled with native soil to the base of
the asphalt pavement. The remaining void was then filled with
a cold asphalt patch.
All sampling equipment was thoroughly scrubbed with Alconox
solution followed by a distilled water rinse prior to being
brought on site and between all samplings.
PHASE II-A. . .SAMPLE; ANALYSIS
Soil samples acquired from on site borings were subsequently
submitted for uncertified analysis using thin layer chromato-
graphy (TLC) and Hanby Direct Extraction. The TLC analysis
uses a small amount of the soil sample which is first weighed
and then mixed with a measured volume of hexane to extract any
hydrocarbon contaminant which may be present. A precise amount
of the extract is then removed and placed upon a TLC plate.
The plate is then inserted into a separation tank, subsequently
removed, and examined with long and shortwave ultraviolet (UV)
light and/or iodine chamber. The intensity of the pattern thus
obtained is compared with the intensity of the pattern of an
action level standard. The Hanby Direct Extraction system,
` in turn, involves direct solvent extraction and subsequent
colormetric analysis against known standards provided by the
manufacturer. y
The results of the referenced analyses for the soil samples `
acquired at the Hutchins Avenue site may be summarized as
follows:
CHART I /
Sample Number Depth b s TLC Result Hanby Result
B1KVA 10 feet N.D.
N.D.
B2KVA 8 feet 1400 ppm
B3KVA 8 feet 1600 ppm > 1600 ppm
B4KVA 10 feet N.D.
N.D.
* Probe refusal due to the presence of hard rock
prevented
the acquisition of sufficient soil to conduct theHanbyprocedure.
N.D. . . .Below the limits of detection (approximately 30 ppm) .
4 .
