' 40 SITE DESCRIPTION
41 Known Site Condition
The only known contaminant located within the approximately 600 cubic yards of stockpiled sod is
petroleum hydrocarbon compound residues The sod is placed in a plastic lined treatment bed with
plastic covering Exposure to the soils, and subsequently, their entrained contaminants would be
during tilling/inoculation activities
42 Pathways for Contaminant Dispersion
This section assesses the pathways along which the gasoline compounds of concern could escape
site boundaries during field operations in the solid, liquid, or vapor state Both the solid and liquid
states do not pose a significant health risk as the compounds of concern are volatile and the soils
containing the contaminants are contained
During the process of tilling the sods and sample collecting, an Organic Vapor Analyzer (OVA) will
be used to monitor the volatile emissions If emissions exceed allowable standards as measured
by the OVA, the activities will be ceased and the bed will be recovered by personnel in level C
equipment See Section 7 and Table 1 for allowable standards
50 HAZARD ASSESSMENT
' The hazard assessment is based on information concerning the petroleum hydrocarbon
concentrations present in the soils at the Jahant Road site
51 Chemical Hazards
Site workers may be exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons during field activities The major
contaminant is gasoline which is present in the soils at concentrations up to 907 mg/kg, benzene
is the primary volatile compound of concern Benzene has been detected in only low
concentrations in the sods (2 8 mg/kg) The routes for exposure include ingestion, inhalation, skin
absorption and eye or skin contact Personnel protection equipment at appropriate levels is
required to eliminate personnel exposure These protection levels will be determined based on the
iOVA readings obtained during the soil inoculation phase See Table 1 for chemical exposure limits
5 2 Physical Hazards
' The risk of fire or explosion during site activities is low due to the medium-to-low flash point of any
petroleum hydrocarbon sod mixture that may be detected Fire extinguishers will be kept onsite
' Since heavy equipment will be used for tilling of the soils, safety precautions should be taken
around this equipment
The potential for exposure to oxygen-depleted atmosphere during the remedial activities is unlikely
since no work will be conducted within a confined space
60 HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING
This section describes the health and safety training requirements for participating in field
operations at the Jahant Road site
3
