WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIRE_ _ENTS ORDER NO. 5-01-055 -2-
TRI VALLEY GROWERS PLANT NO. 4
STOCKTON, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
9. The facility has been in operation since 1929. Tri Valley Growers acquired the facility in the
mid-1960s. Wastewater was discharged to unlined ponds until the early 1980s; however,
wastewater is now directly discharged to the land application areas.
10. Fresh tomato processing occurs from July to September; tomato reprocessing occurs from
February to March. Cherries are processed the remainder of the year.
11. Wastewater flows are highest during the fresh tomato processing season, while lower flows occur
during the remainder of the year when tomato reprocessing and cherry processing occur. Because
of market conditions, production was reduced in operating year 2000; therefore, flow rates
reported in 2000 may not be representative of normal operating conditions. Flow rate data are
presented below:
Month Processing 1996 m 1997 m 1998 m 1999 m 2000 me
January CPBD/TRP 2.54 29.23 17.93 5.33 11.66
February CPBD/TRP 12.62 15.00 22.02 10.26 17.25
March CPBD/TRP 19.69 13.72 21.03 16.80 14.96
April CPBD/TRP 12.72 14.94 10.88 10.49 12.73
May CPBD/TRP 14.37 13.62 8.84 3.33 14.43
June TRP/CPBD 8.81 17.60 5.76 2.31 10.30
July FTP 33.44 13.00 7.61 4.87 4.72
August FTP 70.53 43.87 32.82 23.93 9.68
September FTP 56.80 42.66 28.40 30.22 4.19
October TRP/CPBD 20.10 14.76 8.89 6.62 6.38
November TRP/CPBD 10.44 9.94 3.68 9.49 2.66
December CPBD/TRP 7.77 11.40 5.00 4.57 --
Total 269.83 239.74 172.86 128.22 108.96
mg denotes million gallons.
CPBD denotes Cherry Processing Brine Discharge. TRP denotes Tomato Reprocessing.
FTP denotes Fresh Tomato Processing
12. Stormwater which falls on the processing facility is commingled with wastewater and discharged
to the land application area. Domestic wastewater is discharged to septic tanks and is not
discharged to the stormwater/industrial wastewater disposal system.
13. Process wastewater(and stormwater) is piped to a wastewater sump where it is pumped to rotary
screens. Screened wastewater drains to the wastewater conveyance ditch, where it is pumped to
the land application areas; screened solids are transported on a conveyor belt to a hopper and bin.
Solids are transported off-site as animal feed.
14. Cherry processing brine is discharged to land application areas without precipitating dissolved
solids. This Order requires reduction in wastewater concentrations of dissolved solids.
15. Wastewater generated in the processing plant is characterized by a high organic matter and
dissolved solids content. The range of BODS (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and total nitrogen
applied to the land application areas in the period from 1996 to 1999 is presented below. The
