Site Safety Plan: Subsurface investigation and Safety Plan Page 2
Remedial Excavation of Hydrocarbon-affected Soil
Proposed Cintra Park Phase H Development, Tract 2705, Tracy, California
2.2 Site Personnel and Third Parties
All CTE site personnel, subcontractors, and third part es entering the site will be responsible for
understanding and complying with all SSP requiremen Ls.
3.0 HAZARD ASSESSMENT
3.1 Major Potential Hazards
Consistent efforts will be made throughout the project to evaluate the chemical and physical hazards
described below. Major potential hazards to personal safety at the site include the following:
3.1.1 Physical in' during excavation site Testoration, system maintenance operations,
The potential for accidents will be rc duced by personal protective equipment,
engineering controls, and the exercise o reasonable caution during work activities.
3.1.2 Inhalation ingestion, or skin abso tion f toxic vapors, liquids, or dusts associated
with petroleum hydrocarbons. Gasolin vapors in high concentrations (>300 parts
per million [ppm]) can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness,
and anesthesia. Skin contact with liquid gasoline may result in irritation and
dermatitis and absorption of specific toxic petroleum fractions. Toxic petroleum
hydrocarbon substances include benzene, toluene, and xylenes. Benzene is a known
human carcinogen, and along with tol ene and xylenes can cause damage to an
unprotected individual's liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Ethylbenzene is
a skin irritant in vapor and liquid form.
3.1.3 Explosion and fire. Petroleum produc s are highly flammable. Liquid petroleum
product readily vaporizes from standing pools or saturated soil. Ignition sources of
any kind, such as engines, impact sparking, and heat or are from inappropriate equip-
ment or instrumentation pose a major explosion and fire hazard.
3.1.4 Electrocution from buried or overhead nower lines.
3.1.5 Noise from the operation of hea e ui ment.
3.1.6 Heat Stress. Heat stress creates seco dary safety hazards by impairing worker
coordination and judgment, besides posi ag serious direct health dangers. Heat stress
is more likely when personal protective equipment is in use.
W V Ro7ECTV 0235\ENRPO1.WPB
