t ►
Site Safety Plan: Subsurface Investigation and Safety Plan Page 3
Remedial Excavation of Hydrocarbon-affected Soil
Proposed Cintra Park Phase II Development, Tract 2705, Tracy, California
3.2 Air Monitoring
The fire, explosive, and toxic inhalation hazards previo sly mentioned will be evaluated through an
air monitoring program consisting of the following ele ents:
3.2.1 Combustible Gas Monitoring. A direct- cading combustible gas/oxygen meter will
be used to evaluate the possible forma ion of flammable atmospheres around the
work area. Continuous flammability measurements will be taken at the top of the
boring near the work crew throughout the well installation operations. Periodic
measurements will be taken at the soil piles, within the excavations, and in all
confined areas that may contain and ac emulate combustible vapors. Combustible
readings above 10%of the lower explo ive limit (LEL) will require the suspension
of all work activities until flammable levels have been reduced.
3.2.2 Organic VUor-Monitoring.. Potentiall toxic airborne concentrations of methane,
benzene, toluene, xylenes, and ethylben ene will be measured periodically near the
breathing zone of the work crews with a colormetric indicator tube sampler. If vapor
readings for any of the listed organic con aminants exceed their threshold limit value-
time weighted average (TLV-TWA) oncentrations, appropriate vapor control
strategies will be applied as discussed in Sections 4.0 and 5.0 of this plan(Environ-
mental Controls and Personal Protective Equipment). The TLV-TWA concentration
for each volatile organic compound (V C) is listed in Table 1 below:
.z ?7 ,['"g" ° ..,n..ea¢ ' [T i°pgFkyaa, ¢i°€ s dF (¢r eng€» i°€ ° s 1 ,t, {
. •yg.d3a•3 3d ?33a x33 ssH'
Volatile Organic Compound TLV-TWA m
Benzene 1 ppm
Toluene 100 ppm
Xylenes 100 ppm
Eth lbenzene 100 m
3.3 Noise.
