AGS
3.1 .3 Proposed Site Investigation
The objective of the site investigation at the Buildings 12, 410A and 508 OWS sites is to
collect data sufficient to characterize and delineate potential residual soil and
groundwater contamination at the OWS sites. The general approach for the site
investigation at each OWS site is outlined in the subsections below.
Building 12 OWS. Seven soil borings are proposed to be completed at the Building 12
OWS site (Figure 3). The boring locations at the Building 12 OWS site take into
account the layout of the OWS system at the site and groundwater flow direction. Five
of the seven borings (B12-2 through B12-5) are located in the immediate area of key
components of the OWS system. These borings are positioned directly adjacent and
downgradient of the wash pad catch basin/drain pipe, a drain pipe elbow, the OWS and
adjacent waste oil pipe, the waste oil tank. and the junction of the OWS discharge pipe
with the sanitary sewer line. Two additional borings (B12-1 , -7) are located at the
upgradient and downgradient margins of the OWS site. Soil samples will only be
collected for chemical analysis from the five borings located in the immediate area of
the OWS system. These samples will be collected for the purpose of characterizing ar.d
delineating maximum vadose zone chemical concentrations in the OWS area. Scil
samples will not be collected for chemical analysis from the two other, up- and
downgradient borings because it is considered unlikely that vadose zone contaminants
would extend the approximate 15-ft distance between these borings and the nearest
component of the OWS system. Grab groundwater samples will be collected from all
seven borings to aid characterization and delineation of potentially impacted
groundwater. Table 1 lists all soil borings by OWS site and includes the purpose of
each boring.
Building 410A OWS. Seven soil borings are proposed to be completed at the Building
410A OWS site (Figure 4).
