AGS
3.2 SAMPLING PROTOCOL
All field work will be performed in accordance with the Site-specific Health and Safety
Plan, included in Appendix B of this Work Plan.
3.2.1 Site Clearance
All proposed soil boring locations will be cleared for subsurface utilities prior to
beginning work at each OWS site. The location and type of any subsurface utilities
adjacent to a boring site will be indicated on the ground with aerosol spray paint. The
site clearance will incorporate the use of various types of geophysical exploration
equipment (magnetometer, EM probes, etc.), as appropriate. In addition, the
appropriate permits will be obtained and the Navy will be informed of the proposed
schedule prior to the initiation of the field work.
3.2.2 Soil Borincs
Seven soil borings will be advanced into subsurface materials at each of the three OWS
sites for a total of 21 borings for the project. The borings will be advanced to an
approximate depth of 10 ft bgs, 5 ft below the anticipated depth to groundwater at the
sites. One vadose zone soil sample will be collected for chemical analysis from each cf
the borings located in the immediate area of the OWS system. The soil samples will be
collected from depths generally equivalent to (but not exceeding 2 ft below) the bottom
of the OWS and other components of the OWS system. If the bottom of the tank vault
occurs below the water table, the tank vault soil sample will be collected from a point
just above the water table. No soil samples will be collected for chemical analysis from
the more distant up- and downgradient borings.
Table 1 lists and identifies the soil borings for each OWS site and also provides the type
and number of samples for each boring and the purpose for the boring. Altogether, a
total of 15 soil samples will be collected at the OWS sites.
