Page 2
425 Larch Road May 7, 2010
Tracy, California 95376
Prior to installing a monitoring well off-site and down-gradient of the source area, AA&A
proposes to advance eight soil borings at locations illustrated on Figure 6 of the work plan to
determine the extent of the petroleum hydrocarbon plume and assess the necessity to install
an additional monitoring well/wells off-site. The EHD approves the locations of seven of the
borings; however, the EHD believes the borehole identified as B8 should be relocated to the
grassy area along West Larch Road approximately one-hundred feet east of proposed
borehole B1. AA&A proposes to continuously core each borehole at four-foot intervals for
lithologic characterization while observing the soil for signs of petroleum contamination and
using a photo ionization detector to record VOC concentrations. AA&A does not propose to
collect soil samples for analysis but does propose to collect a grab groundwater sample at
total depth of approximately twenty feet bsg from each proposed soil boring. Please analyze
the groundwater samples for the same constituents listed in the previous paragraph.
If field and analytical results from the advancement of the eight borings indicate the need for
one or more monitoring wells down-gradient of the source area, then AA&A proposes to install
the well/wells to total depth of twenty feet bsg with a screen interval from approximately four to
twenty feet bsg. Since the well construction diagram for MW28 in Figure 7 differs from the
well construction narrative found on page five of the work plan, the EHD directs that the well
be constructed with a screen interval from five to twenty feet bsg since all other wells installed
at this site since 2005 have a screen interval from five to twenty feet bsg. Also the EHD
recommends that a two-inch and not a four-inch Schedule 40 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) casing
be installed.
Please provide documentation for access to each of the addresses listed above prior to
collecting groundwater samples from each of the domestic wells and submit the report of
findings from this investigation to the EHD by August 11, 2010. Submit documentation for
access to each of the parcels where AA&A proposes to advance the eight soil borings along
with a boring permit application and permit inspection fee of $434 for each parcel to the EHD
and complete the fieldwork for the advancement of the eight soil borings by August 2, 2010,
and the installation of one or more off-site wells by September 15, 2010.
If you have any questions, please contact Vicki McCartney at (209) 468-9852, or by e-mail at
vmccartney@sjcehd.com.
Sincerely,
Victoria L.
