2.4 Sample Analysis Summary
A total of 16 soil samples (including 4 background samples) and 3 grab groundwater samples will be
collected. Selected soil samples will be analyzed for VOCs, TPH, PAHs, and Title 22 metals.
Groundwater samples will also be analyzed for VOCs, TPH, PAHs, and Title 22 metals.
2.5 Field Activities
The field activities consist of collecting soil and groundwater samples using a Geoprobe sampling
system.
A site and task specific Health and Safety Plan (HASP) was developed for the site and is attached as
Appendix C. The HASP will be present in the field during the field activities.
3.0 FIELD OPERATIONS
This section describes the methods and procedures that will be used during sampling. Waste hand-
ling is also discussed.
3.1 Sampling Methods and Procedures
A utility clearance will be completed by notifying Underground Services Alert (USA) at least 48-
hours prior to sampling activities.
A total of 16 soil samples and 3 groundwater samples will be collected. Table 3 provides details
regarding sampling locations, sample depths, sample identification, and proposed analytical testing.
The proposed sample depths for soil are 5.5 — 6.0 feet, 7.5 — 8.0 feet, and 9.5 — 10.0 feet. The
uppermost sample will be analyzed and the other two held pending analytical results. Depth of
sampling may be adjusted based on the depth of associated sumps or filed observations/PID
readings. Any changes will be discussed with the DTSC project manager.
3.1.1 Soil Sampling
The sample borings will be advanced using a direct push (Geoprobe) drilling rig. A vehicle-
mounted, hydraulically-powered soil probing machine that utilizes static force and percussion to
advance small diameter sampling tools into the subsurface will be used to collect soil samples. Each
soil interval will be continuously cored by a driving action that forces relatively undisturbed soil into
a lined sampler barrel. Following the driving operation, the sampler will be retrieved from the boring
and the sample liner removed. A portion of the soil sample liner will be selected and prepared for
shipment to the analytical laboratory. The section of liner obtained for analyses will be sealed with
Teflon sheets and air tight end caps. Each sample will be labeled and preserved in a cooler with ice
packs.
Each soil sample interval will be monitored in the field for possible volatiles using a portable field
analyzer. A portion of the sample interval adjacent to the retained sample will be measured and the
meter readings recorded. The field analyzer is a battery-powered instrument which detects and
indicates concentrations of volatile organic compounds in the air in the parts-per-million range.
Vapor is drawn continuously by means of a built-in pump and analyzed. The field readings will be
1163-3 2014 0617 PEAWP 3 8 GRI
