used only as a qualitative field measure of potential soil contamination. The borings will be sealed
using a neat cement grout.
The recovered soil core will be examined by a geologist. The geologist will visually observe the soil
and record the soil characteristics on a field log. The soil description will be based on the Unified
Soil Classification System.
3.1.2 Grab Groundwater Sampling
A vehicle-mounted, hydraulically-powered soil probing machine (Geoprobe)that utilizes static force
and percussion to advance small diameter sampling tools into the subsurface will be used to collect
water samples. When the final depth of the boring is reached, the drill casing will be removed, and a
temporary well casing with 10 feet of screen will be placed in the hole.
Dedicated tubing and a peristaltic pump will be used to collect a water sample from each of the
temporary wells. Water samples will be placed in appropriate containers with appropriate
preservative. Sample containers will be filled to the top, capped, and sealed.
3.2 Surveying
Sample locations will plotted on a map and distances from known reference points measured and
recorded. The measurements will be used to create a sample location map for the PEA report. A
survey by a licensed land surveyor is not proposed for this sampling project.
3.3 Decontamination
To prevent potential cross-contamination between sampling points, all measuring, purging, and
sampling equipment will be washed using a phosphate-free detergent solution, rinsed in tap water,
and finally rinsed in distilled or deionized water.
3.4 Waste Management
Investigation derived wastes will consist of soil cuttings produced from the borings installed to
collect soil and groundwater samples and purge water from groundwater sampling. These wastes
will be drummed, labeled, and properly disposed. Documentation of the waste disposal will be
placed in the site investigation report.
3.5 Sample Handling
3.5.1 Sample Containers
Sample containers requirements will follow those outlined in the USEPA's publication SW-846,
Test Method for Evaluating Soil Wastes: Physical/Chemical Methods, Third Edition, Final Update
III,December 1996.
Soil samples will be collected directly from the sample liner. Following the Geoprobe driving
operation, the sampler will be retrieved from the boring and the sample liner removed. A portion of
the soil sample liner will be selected and prepared for shipment to the analytical laboratory. The
section of liner obtained for analyses will be sealed with Teflon sheets and air-tight end caps.
1163-3 2014 0617 PEn\N P 3 9 GRI
