Groundwater collected for analysis of TPHd and TPHmo will be placed into 1-liter bottles with
Teflon-lined caps. Groundwater collected for analysis of VOCs will be placed into 40-milliliter vials
with Teflon-lined septa and preserved using hydrochloric acid.
3.5.2 Sample Volumes,Preservation Requirements
Sample preservation method and holding time requirements will follow those outlined in the
USEPA's publication SW-846, Test Method for Evaluating Soil Wastes: Physical/Chemical
Methods, Third Edition, Final Update III, December 1996.
As stated in Section 3.5.1, soil samples will be collected directly from the sample liner. An
approximate 6-inch section of the liner will provide adequate volume for the requested analyses. The
section of liner obtained for analyses will be sealed with Teflon sheets and air tight end caps. Each
sample will be labeled and preserved in a cooler with ice packs. Encore samplers will be used to
obtain samples for VOC analysis. The samples must be extracted within 48 hours after sample
collection.
Groundwater collected for analysis of TPHd and TPHmo will be placed into 1-liter bottles with
Teflon-lined caps. Groundwater collected for analysis VOCs will be placed into 40-milliliter vials
with Teflon-lined septa. Samples in vials will be preserved using hydrochloric acid and acidified to a
pH of less than 2.0. Immediately after characterization and preparation, all samples will be sealed in
air-tight plastic bags and placed in a refrigerated chest for preservation. The samples must be
extracted within 7 days after sample collection.
3.5.3 Sample Identification
All samples will be labeled. The field geologist will identify all samples taken in the field by using a
pre-printed sample label attached to the sample container. The sample label will include the
following information:
■ sampling company name;
■ project name and number;
■ unique sample identification number;
■ date and time of sample collection; and
■ initials of the sampler.
3.5.4 Packaging and Shipping
All samples will be placed in a refrigerated cooler, and accompanied by the chain-of-custody
document. Samples will betransported to the laboratory via courier and analyzed within the
appropriate holding time.
3.5.5 Field Quality Control
Ambient Blank
At least one ambient blank will be collected near a sample analyzed for VOCs. Three 40 ml VOAs
filled with deionized water will be set out with the vials open to the ambient air during groundwater
sampling activities to evaluate if ambient air is contaminating the primary samples.
1163-3 2014 0617 PEAWP 3 10 GRI
