APP/SSHP <br /> Soil Excavation at California National Guard Armory <br /> Lodi, California <br /> 6.0 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT <br /> 6.1 GENERAL <br /> Selection of appropriate PPE will be based on the contaminant type(s), concentration(s), and <br /> routes of exposure. All potential exposures will be considered in the selection of appropriate <br /> protection levels to provide adequate worker protection. The major objectives of the PPE <br /> programs are to select appropriate and approved PPE for the hazards; to ensure that the <br /> devices are introduced to users with a clear and complete explanation of their protection value <br /> and method of proper use; and to assign supervisory responsibility ensuring proper use and <br /> continued maintenance of the devices. All workers using respirators will have a yearly <br /> qualitative or quantitative respirator fit test and will meet all requirements for use under OSHA <br /> 29 CFR 1910.134. Note: respirators are not expected to be needed at this site. <br /> Work Mission Duration: November 2009 through September 2010. <br /> 6.2 LEVELS OF PROTECTION AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS <br /> Appropriate PPE will be worn according to pre-determined material exposure levels. The <br /> required safety equipment and clothing must be available on site before work is to begin. <br /> The following articles constitute Level D equipment, it may be used as appropriate; <br /> • Coveralls, (long trousers and shirt), <br /> • Work gloves*, <br /> • Boots/shoes, chemical-resistant steel toe and shank, <br /> • Boots, outer, chemical-resistant (disposable)*, <br /> • ANSI rated safety glasses or chemical splash goggles*, <br /> • Hard hat, <br /> • Hearing protection devices (ear plugs or muffs), <br /> • Escape mask*, <br /> • Face shield*. <br /> The (*) indicates the item may be Optional, as applicable. <br /> Used When: <br /> • The atmosphere contains no known hazard; and <br /> • Work functions preclude splashes, immersion, potential for inhalation, or direct contact <br /> with hazard chemicals. <br /> Limitations: <br /> • This level should not be worn in a known or dedicated "Hot Zone". Note: This project will <br /> not have a known or dedicated "Hot Zone". <br /> • The atmosphere shall contain at least 19.5% oxygen. <br /> • Not acceptable for chemical emergency response. <br /> • PPE can be disposed of as general solid waste. <br /> • Specific decontamination and disposal procedures for Level D PPE are not designated <br /> in this plan as NO chemical contamination is anticipated during site activities. <br /> OTI E 20 <br />
