APP/SSHP
Soil Excavation at California National Guard Armory
Lodi, California
• Employees will be properly fitted with assigned Level D PPE and trained in its use during
annual 8-hr refresher training or during site orientation training by the SSHO.
• Employees will also be trained in proper donning and doffing procedures of assigned
PPE, as necessary during annual 8-hr refresher training or during site orientation training
by the SSHO.
6.2.1 Training
PPE training is required and will be provided to each employee who is required to wear PPE.
Training should include at least the following:
• When to wear PPE;
• What PPE to wear;
• How to don, doff, adjust, and wear PPE;
• What are the capabilities and limitations of the PPE;
• How to properly maintain PPE; and
• When and how to dispose of PPE.
Employees must demonstrate knowledge of the training specified above and the ability to use
PPE properly before being allowed to perform work requiring the use of PPE.
Training is required annually or whenever any of the following situations occur:
• Workplace operations change such that previous PPE or training is obsolete.
• Level D PPE inspection procedures will be as follows:
The PPE user must take all necessary steps to ensure that the protective ensemble will perform
as expected. Emergencies are not the right time to discover problems! Following a standard
program for inspecting protective equipment and realizing its limitations are the best ways to
avoid exposure during PPE use.
An effective PPE inspection program features:
• Inspection and operational testing of equipment as received from the factory or
distributor;
• Inspection of equipment as it is selected for a particular operation;
• Inspection of equipment after use or training and prior to maintenance;
• Periodic inspection of stored equipment; and
• Periodic inspection when questions arise about the appropriateness of the selected
equipment, or when problems with similar equipment are discovered.
6.2.2 Storage
All PPE must be stored properly to prevent damage or malfunction from exposure to dust,
moisture, sunlight, damaging chemicals, extreme temperatures, and impact. Some guidelines
for storage include:
• Potentially contaminated clothing or equipment should be stored separately from street
clothing and unused PPE for subsequent proper disposal.
OTIE 21
