2.2 Well Abandonment
All well abandonment procedures will be performed in accordance with the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Well Standards (undated), Section 6,Destruction of Wells. A permit for
well destruction will be obtained from San Joaquin County prior to initiating any abandonment
' work.
' Wells MW-1 and MW-12 will be abandoned by the following procedures:
' Existing pumps and other downhole appurtenances and/or obstructions will be removed.
Where possible, pumping equipment will be retained for potential reuse in other site
wells.
• Prior to grouting, a hole at least one foot larger in diameter than the original boring will
be excavated to a depth of three feet below grade. The well casing will be cut at this
depth and removed . Grout used to seal the well will be allowed to fill the excavation to a
depth of one foot. After the grout hardens adequately, the excavation will be backfilled
' with clean, inert soil material and covered with asphalt or concrete to match surrounding
surface materials.
' The remaining borings will be pressure grouted through a tremie pipe placed immediately
above the bottom of the boring. Cement grout will be used and will be mixed in
conformance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specification
D5299. The mixture will consist of Type I/II Portland cement mixed with five percent
bentonite powder at a rate of seven gallons of water per one 94 lb. sack of cement.
' (CAPROJECTS\IEPRINOWWAbandon MMOrkPI=Rev 4.%vo) 4 HSIGEOTRANS
