v 1
American Savings Bank - OES
January 7, 1994
Page -2-
reported low concentrations of STEX constituents in the soil
sample collected from beneath the south end of the former tank
_ location. The native soil at the site is dark gray to black,
organic rich, silty, fine grained sand to a depth of
approximately 2 feet. From the 2 foot depth to at least 19 feet
below grade, light brown clay is present.
On December 8, 1993, Oil Equipment Service (OES) excavated
the south sidewall and floor of the original tank excavation.
Approximately 2 feet of soil was removed from the sidewall and
approximately 3 feet from the floor of the excavation. The
dimensions of the enlarged excavation were 27 feet by 12 feet by
19 feet deep. CONDOR used an Organic Vapor Analyzer - Flame
Ionization Detector (OVA - FID) to screen the excavated material
for petroleum constituents . The over-excavation was terminated
following indications of non-detectable petroleum concentrations
with the FID and the absence of petroleum stained soil . The OVA
has a detection limit of 1 part per million (ppm) organic vapor.
The excavated material was placed on asphalt adjacent to the
excavation. Groundwater was not encountered during the over-
excavation. The excavation was surrounded with temporary, chain
link fencing.
Two (2 ) soil samples were collected following over-
excavation. One sample was collected from the south sidewall at
a depth of 16 feet and one sample was collected from the floor of
the excavation at a depth of 19 feet . The soil samples were
collected by driving a clean brass tube into freshly exposed soil
_ brought to the surface in a backhoe bucket. Two (2 ) soil samples
were collected from the stockpile of over-excavated material .
Figure 2 shows locations and label numbers of all samples .
^1 CONDOR
