L.. Report-Soil Investigation
Page 3
Former LTPRR Service Yard
Project No. 376.2
1.0 May 9, 2003
2.0 FIELD DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURES
La
2.1 Geo-Probe Soil Borings
On April 22, 2003 three Geo-Probe soil borings (designated B-1, B-2, & B-3) were
L- completed at locations shown on the site map and under the supervision of Mr.
Harlin Knoll of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department.
Boring B-1 was advanced at a point about 2 feet south of the pit of a former
'- underground storage tank to a total depth of 45 feet below grade. The borings B-
2 and B-3 were located in the south and central parts of the former rail spur
area on the east side of the Property, and were advanced to a total depth of 20
feet below grade. All three borings were drilled using a 1.5-inch o.d. Geo-probe
equipment owned and operated by V & W Drilling Inc., of Rio Vista, CA (License
#720904). Soil samples were collected for geological and possible analytical
evaluation at five-foot intervals. In addition, upon reaching total depth a
groundwater sample was collected from boring SB-1. Upon reaching total depth
in each boring and collecting the final sample, each boring was filled to grade
with neat cement.
The Geo-Probe is a truck mounted drilling system that uses direct push
methodology to collect soil and groundwater samples. Four foot long by 1.5-inch
diameter stainless steel rods are pushed or hammered into the ground using a
La hydraulic ram or the hydraulically actuated hammer mounted on the ram. Soil
samples are collected using a 1.5-foot long by 1.5 inch inside diameter drive
sampler lined with a plastic sample sleeve. This device is activated by removing
a retaining bolt from the top of the device by inserting rods through the hollow
stem of the probe rods. Removing this retaining bolt allows the drive point to
retract through the sampling tube and a sample to be collected.
2.2 Geo-Probe Soil and Groundwater Sampling
2.2.1 Geo-Probe Soil Sampling
Upon retrieval of each soil sample, the end of each plastic sample tube removed
. from the coring device and possibly submitted for laboratory analysis was sealed
with Teflon sheets, capped with plastic end caps, secured with tape, labeled and
placed in a cooler at 4° Celsius for transport to the laboratory using Chain of
La Custody protocol. Chain of Custody (CofQ forms are documents used to track
the handling of samples. All dates, times, persons and companies handling the
samples were listed from the time the sample was collected to its ultimate
disposal.
Nitrile gloves were worn during sample collection and changed between the
collection of each sample.
.. 2937 Veneman Ave.,#B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
