ARCADIS Mr. Rob Saur
January 21,,2009
r
Recent Field Activities
On November,17, 2008 ARCADIS oversaw soil sampling activities that consisted of
three soil samples taken from one boring at idepths of one, three and six feet below
ground surface(bgs). The soil boring location is shown on Figure 1.
Prior to initiating field activities, a utility survey was conducted to identify and mark
out underground utilities and other.potential subsurface obstructions in the vicinity of
the proposed boring locations. The utility survey included identifying the site using
) white paint and obtaining an Underground Service Alert(USA-North)ticket for the
J site by.calling USA-North at least 48 hours prior to soil boring activities.Additionally,
a private third-party utility locator screened all proposed boring locations to locate
nearby underground utilities. Photo logs of the utility.markings are shown in
Attachment A.
Due to the presence of multiple underground utilities immediately surrounding the
vault the set of borings proposed in ARCADIS' Work Plan for Soil Investigation dated l
September 3, 2008-could not be completed. Among the underground utilities
identified in the survey were high-voltage electrical lines, gas lines, and three
separate fiber optic lines. The presence of these types of underground utilities poses
a significant health and safety risk to any type of subsurface'investigatory work. A
detailed site plan showing the utilities encountered during field activities is shown on
Figure 1. Soil borings SB-1 through SB-4 (shown on Figure 1)were not completed
due to the presence of underground utilities. SB-5 was completed to a total depth of
six feet bgs.
Soil samples were collected using a 2-inch diameter hand auger.. Following
collection, the samples were transported by a lab courier to Calscience
Environmental Laboratories (Calscience); a.California-certified analytical laboratory,
ry under proper chain-of-custody procedures. The three soil samples collected from the
Lsoil boring(SB-5)were analyzed for Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH)as mineral
oil by USEPA Method 8015B (M)with silica gel cleanup.
Sample Results and Discussion
A total of three soil samples were collected and analyzed for TPH as mineral oil.
Laboratory results indicate that none of the three soil samples that were analyzed
contained any detectable concentrations of TPH as mineral oil above Method
Page:
213_
