(GTI) and has the following
comments-
The Addendum was submitted to complete the June 25, 2003 Corrective Action Plan (CAP), and
provide support for the recommended remedial alternative, over excavation of contaminated soil.
In February 2004 a geoprobe investigation was conducted at your site to determine the lateral
and vertical extent of the soil contamination. GTI has estimated that up to 1,500 cubic yards of
contaminated soil remains at the site. This is the estimated worst-case scenario. Results of the
geoprobe investigation, and data from previous investigations, indicate that soil contamination is
present in the former tank pit area from approximately 6-15 feet below surface grade (bsg);
deeper contamination, noted from approximately 11-15 feet bsg only, is present over a larger
area of the site.
SJCIEHD approves the proposed remediation by over excavation. As discussed at the March 27,
2003 site meeting, prior to proceeding with this type of remediation, monitoring well MW-1 will
need to be properly destroyed. Monitoring well MW-101 is also located within the proposed
excavation area, but was installed with a steel conductor casing to 30 feet bsg that should ensure
its integrity during the excavation.
Please proceed with submittal of a detailed work plan for conducting the remediation, including
the destruction by overdrilling of MW-1, and its replacement following the remedial action. In
addition to the well destruction, there are utilities at the site that will need to be moved,
specifically, a propane tank and the site septic system. Preparations for the utility work should
begin immediately.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director -
Environmental Health Department
Nuel C.
