06 December 1995
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0100
annual monitoring activities should include the installation of soil borings to collect soil samples to
monitor bacterial populations, nutrient availability and soil remediation progress. If monitoring
— indicates areas of slow remediation, additional inoculations may be required. Other monitoring
requirements may be requested by the regulatory agencies.
5.2.5. FEASIBILITY STUDIES
During installation of the soil vapor extraction wells, a soil sample was collected for physicochemical
and microbiological analysis. Both the physicochemcial analysis and the microbiological enumeration
of the sample indicated generally favorable conditions for bioremediation and a high percentage of
existing biodegrading microbes. The soil had less than optimal concentration of nitrates, and slightly
more potassium. Based upon the analytical results, it appears that a program of biostitnulation may
be successful at the Franklyn Cole site.
5.2.6. DURATION
Duration(and cost)are dependent on the volume of soil to be remediated, the number of inoculation
wells and inoculation events, the chemical composition and concentrations of contaminants,
concentrations of nutrients, soil temperature, and porosity and permeability of the soil. "Theoretically,
the radius of influence of the inoculation wells should increase rapidly at. first, then gradually decline
as the affected volume increases and the bacteria encounter decreasing hydrocarbon concentrations
toward the margins of the contaminant plume. We estimate that in-situ bioremediation of the
Franklyn Cole site would will take between 18 and 24 months.
5.2.7 COST
The cost for in-situ bioremediation will vary, depending upon the volume of inoculant required and
the number of remediation wells to be inoculated. The cost for in-.situ bioremediation at the Franklyn
— Cole property would likely range from $25,000 to $40,000, including installation of a blower system
(for oxygen). The combined weekly and monthly monitoring costs are generally between $10,000
_ and $20,000 annually. Soil probes to monitor bioremediation progress typically average $5,000 to
$10,000 annually. Based upon a single inoculation event and a 24-month remediation period, the
estimated total cost for bioremediation of soil at the subject site will be between $50,000 and
$100,000.
