In order to remediate soil
contamination a vapor extraction system was installed in April 1992. PHS/EHD
agrees that vapor extraction is an effective method to remediate gasoline
contaminated soil. The most recent quarterly monitoring report, dated June 5,
1992, indicated that the vapor extraction system would be in operation for an
initial period of 6 months, prior to confirmation evaluation. The most recent air
pollution report, dated July 17, 1992, indicated that influent concentrations had
decreased from 6600 ppb TPH-g and 210 ppb benzene (April 15, 1992) to 670
ppb TPH-g and 6 ppb benzene (June 10, 1992). Please continue to send copies of
air pollution reports to PHS/EHD for review.
Groundwater contamination
Groundwater contamination has been confirmed. While recent groundwater
samples have not detected contamination above Iaboratory detection limits, the
lateral extent of groundwater contamination was never established. A minimum of
three monitoring wells are necessary to determine groundwater gradient direction,
unless an adjacent site has monitoring wells which can provide gradient
information. Unfortunately, there is not a nearby site with monitoring wells to
provide gradient information. Therefore, it will be necessary to install a minimum
of two monitoring wells to determine groundwater gradient direction. Due to
spacial constraints it is likely that additional monitoring wells may have to be
installed off site, in which case encroachment agreements with neighboring
property owners will have to be established. PIease submit a work plan to install
additional monitoring wells by December 14, 1992.
A Division of hn Joaquin County Health Care Services
