Page 7
Soil Vapor Extraction
L Pilot Test Work Plan
Project No. 770.2
September 17,2003
I
' Volumetric Air Flow
Two methods will be used to measure the volumetric airflow:
• Solomat SOOe multifunctional instrument with,a Pitot tube will be used to measure
air speed inside a straight section of 3-inch i.d. pipe. The volumetric airflow is then
calculated from the velocity and pipe cross sectional area.
L
• The second is by instrumentation provided by ECO-Services that will be mounted on
their dual phase equipment.
3.5 Soil Vapor Analyses
l
I
A vacuum pump will be used to collect air samples from the vapor extraction well on a
routine basis (one to two samples per day) during the tests to evaluate mass transfer rates.
L The air samples will be collected ina charcoal canister (NIOSH Method 1550) and
submitted to Air-Toxics Ltd. in Sacramento, California for BTEX, TPH-D analysis. We t
propose to collect up to 10 samples during the test. '
The detection limits are listed below.
Detection Limits: TPH-D
Air(µg/L) 100
4.0 EFFECTIVENESS TESTING
- i
GTI shall calculate the radius of influence by measuring vacuum pressure from the
extraction well VEW-1 and of vacuum pressure in the new vapor extraction well VEW-2.
The amount of pressure necessary for demonstrating vacuum influence is generally
regarded as at least 0.1 inches of water("How to Evaluate Alternative Cleanup Technologies
for Underground Storage Tank Sites", USEPA, May, 1995).
The result of the data analyses will be used to determine if high vacuum soil vapor
extraction is a viable remedial alternative for the site.
The purpose of this remedial action test is:
1. Test the feasibility of removing the high concentrations of petroleum compounds that
t are continuing to leach into groundwater using high vacuum extraction pressures.
l.+ 2. To gather sufficient information needed to prepare a remedial action plan.
I
I!
