On October 19, 1995 I spoke with Douglas Yee, at the Department of Developmental Services,
he stated that the facility will be deserted in January of 1996. The facility will be in maintenance
care for one year, and then it will be transferred to the Department of General Services. When
the facility is deserted, the water tower will no longer be needed.
Mr. Yee also said that the $90,000 budget change proposal for the work will be on the
Governors desk in January for the preliminary budget. The budget will be finalized in March.
The funds for the cleanup will become available July 1, 1996, and that is when the cleanup will
begin.
Mr. Yee stated that the parties that are interested in the site are the UOP Medical School, St.
Joseph's Hospital, commercial interests due to the presence of rail lines, and the County because
of current lease agreements.
The center was directed by PHS/EHD to submit a work plan for in situ remediation, and in
place closure of the UST by May 25, 1995. Because the state is willing to remove the tank and
over excavate the area when the tower is removed, the compliance date has not been enforced.
I
I
i
E
i
t
r
